Detox your wardrobe and find your true style...

2019 is now in full swing and with Spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe! The excitement that a new year brings provides the ideal opportunity to re-evaluate what’s lurking in your wardrobe… does it suit me? Why did I buy this? And sometimes even, what is this?

Your wardrobe is a really special place that’s full of memories. Think of the dress you wore on a date night when you met someone special, or that cozy jumper you love to curl up in on the sofa. Your clothes are a snapshot of your life, and that’s one of the reasons it can be so painful to let go of them.

As well as evoking powerful memories, clothes can also transform your mood. A tailored blazer can bring confidence at work and a bright jumper can bring out a smile on a dismal day. But, they can also bring you down. For example, wearing dark, shapeless clothes to ‘hide’ in, will eventually make you feel “uncomfortable”.

Indeed there are many reasons why you may feel unhappy with your clothes selection, one of the main ones being because they don’t reflect your true personality. That’s when finding your real personal style can really help. So forget about dressing for your partner or your girlfriends; the key to looking and feeling great is dressing for the most important person, you.

Have confidence in what you like and find ways to restyle it. It’s far better to have a smaller wardrobe with key pieces that you love, than one filled with non-joy bringing ones. Falling victim to the need to buy something new to feel or look good is all too easy. But, if you make just one resolution this year, try to limit your purchases to those that make you happy and wear them on repeat. It's a win for your wardrobe and your wallet!

To get you started, here are my top three tips on refreshing your wardrobe:

  1. Set aside at least a couple of hours to go through your wardrobe calmly and methodically.

  2. Sort yours clothes into 3 groups: - Items that are uncomfortable, don’t fit or just don’t bring you joy - remove them. - Items that you love - the keepers!! - Items you’re not sure of - unquestionably, the most difficult group and maybe where a second opinion from a trusted friend or stylist can be helpful.

  3. Replace any miscellaneous coat hangers (you can recycle them in many supermarkets) with some new matching ones. Slim, velvet coated ones are ideal, as they are terrific space savers and clothes don’t slip off. This tip may sound superfluous but, trust me, it makes a huge difference.
